RIGA, April 30 (LETA) - In the coming days, the first container train from China will arrive at the Riga Port's central terminal, LETA was informed by the joint-stock railroad company's "Latvijas dzelzcels" (LDz) public relations department.
The goal of the pilot project is to calculate tariffs, the time of the journey, the effectiveness of services and timetables, as well as to compare the pros and cons of rail transport to sea transport, by sending a container train from China through Latvia to Western Europe.
The rail companies from China, Kazakhstan, Russia and Latvia are involved in the pilot project, as well as several businesses from Germany.
The final destination of the cargo is the Port of Hamburg.
''The huge Chinese market opens up wide possibilities for the development of Latvia's transit business, that is why I hope that this container train will be the start of future cooperation,'' said LDz chairman of the board Ugis Magonis.
