RIGA, Aug 10 (LETA) - Today, whilst continuing his visit to China, Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis (People's Party) talked about Latvia's economic potential and invited Chinese businesspeople to establish new trade routes to Latvia, LETA was informed by the State Chancellery's communications department.

Today, Kalvitis met with Chinese Vice Prime Minister Wu Yi and unveiled the Chinese International Investment and Trade Exhibition. In his address, Kalvitis emphasized Latvia's strategic geographic importance, which allows Latvia to be a bridge between east and west.

A large number of Chinese businesspeople interested in cooperation possibilities with Latvia participated in the exhibition.

"Historically, Latvia has been an important transit route from north to south and east to west," said Kalvitis.

With the increase of the volume of trade between China and Europe, Kalvitis invited the businesspeople to consider the possibility to establish a new transit route that would connect Latvia with China. Pointing out the already existing trade route from China through Kazakhstan and Russian to Latvia, Kalvitis pointed out the transporting cargo by this transit route would save time and be relatively cost effective.

Kalvitis introduced the businesspeople with the development of Latvia's national economy and pointed out that Latvia's economic growth has been the fastest in Europe the past few years.
